A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press the 24-year-old right fielder has agreed to a $35 million, five-year contract that runs from 2017-21. The Pirates have made it a point in recent years to lock up the young core of players that have made three straight playoff appearances and have the second-best record in the majors since the start of 2013. The club’s opening day roster topped $100 million for the first time in 2016 and ranked 19th out of the 30 major league teams. The Pirates signed the left-handed Polanco as a raw teenager in 2009 and he steadily made his way through the farm system while developing into one of the best outfield prospects in the majors.
